Windows 7 Setup Guide

VPN UK SETUP guide for Microsoft Windows (Vista and newer).

 

Go to the official OpenVPN GUI  download page  and download the "Installer, Windows 7 and later" client, as seen in the image below:

 

 

Firefox web browser users will see the arrow turn blue  once download is complete.  Click on the arrow, then click on the openvpn-install file to start installing the program to your computer.

 

Chrome web browser users will see the downloaded file at the bottom left of your screen, click this to start the install.

 

A popup window will ask you "Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to your computer" - Click "yes".

Install the OpenVPN program (keep clicking next / I agree etc) be sure to keep default options selected / ticked, once install is complete, click Finish.

 

Windows 7 users should install tap-windows-9.9.2_3.exe,

Windows 7 has compatibility problems with the default TAP adapter included in the OpenVPN Gui setup (causing connection to be a bit slow). Download the TAP adapter using the link above, or go to the bottom of the OpenVPN download page and look for tap-windows-9.9.2_3.exe, install it using the default options. Then continue with the setup guide below.

 

After installing the TAP adapter for Windows 7 (above),
run the OpenVPN program using the new OpenVPN GUI icon on your desktop or start menu.

 

When the program is running, you control it using the icon found in the system tray (bottom right of your screen, next to the clock). The icon looks like a monitor with a padlock icon on it.

If you cannot see the icon, click the small white triangle near the clock. This will show all of your system tray icons and you should now see the OpenVPN icon.

OPTIONAL -  To make the icon always visible near your clock, click on "customize" as seen in the previous image. Then scroll to "OpenVPN GUI for Windows" and select "Show icon and notifications", as seen in the image below.

 

Download our configuration file - from here (using your right hand mouse button, right click on the link then choose "save as"):

 

Remember which folder you save the file to (e.g., "Documents"):

 

Now you must import this file to the OpenVPN program so it knows to connect to our VPN servers. (Every VPN provider have their own config files).

Import the VPNUK1 config file, right click on the OpenVPN icon and choose "Import file"

 

Browse to the location you saved the config file (e.g., "Documents"). Select the file and click Open, as seen below:

 

Now you can connect to our VPN server using the OpenVPN icon in your system tray.

  • Right click the icon and "Connect"
  • Enter your VPN-UK website username (not email address) and password.
  • Tick the "Save password" box.
  • Click OK to connect!

While the VPN is connecting, you will see this dialog box (below) for a few seconds.

After 5-10 seconds when the dialog box has minimised to the system tray, you are connected! The OpenVPN system tray icon turns green:

If you wish to disconnect from the VPN, right click the icon in the system tray.
